 Sanquhar Castle

Bult in the 13th Century, Sitting on the left hand side as you approach the burgh from the south. The castle is a stronghold bounded on the west by the River Nith, to the north by a burn, and made strong by a deep ditch running the remainder of the boundary. It was visited by many notable figures including Robert the BruceWilliam WallaceEdward IMary, Queen of Scots, and James VI.

Sadly the castle is too dangerous for the public to explore inside and is fenced off but you can still enjoy the walk round about the fields and imagine the history that once was.

The Waird and War Memorial

In 1774 the Sanquhar Society of Curlers was formed. Competitions between the local parishes was keen and the warid was one of the popular venues.

This memorial commemorates the residents of Sanquhar who were killed or missing in World War I and World War II, the Korea War and the conflict on Borneo.

The waird is a relaxing place to walk around , with seats to sit and enjoy the views. Today it is home for the ducks , the ducks will approach you , so don't be frightened.

Cameron Monument

The monument marks the original site of the market cross of Sanquhar. On 22nd June 16802,Richard Cameron and his followers rode into Sanquhar and affixed to the cross his declaration disowning Charles II as King. This act was to result in the battle of Airds Moss on 26th July and although the covenanters fought bravely they were overcome by government Dragoons. Eight Covenanters including Richard were killed. In 1685 James Renwick made the second declaraion at the cross which led to his execution in Edinburgh at the Grassmarket.
